"Now it came about in the thirtieth year, on the fifth day of the fourth month, while I was by the river Chebar among the exiles, the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God."
While God may certainly grab out attention and affection at any time, it is not unreasonable to expect to hear from Him during times of prayer and meditation. Ezekiel was in prayer "along the river" (where exiled Jews would go for worship) and there he saw his vision. God revealed amazing things to Ezekiel, surely He will open the eyes and ears of all those servants who worship Him in spirit and in truth.
Prayer
Lord, please visit Your servant in a very real way during out quiet times together and teach me what You will - for Your name and glory, and that I might know You better still, Amen.

One of the biggest struggles in my Christian life is to know for sure when I'm hearing from God. Can you elaborate more on what it means to really hear from God?
I think that in Ezekiel's case, it was a vision. The book of Hebrews tells us God has now spoken through His Son. I do not believe we receive specific instruction or input in all of the specifics,we have been instructed on via the revealed will of God in principles, wherein we then apply those to decisions.
Since we are more than our bodies, our ears, eyes etc. are not necessary for God to communicate, though of course he uses them. He could communicate just in our spiritual understanding, in which case it can be difficult to know if it is God or me wanting it to be God!
We see little in the NT about "hearing from God" outside of scripture given to the apostles etc., and specific instruction from God. I do not think we should expect anything different. We may hear from Him audibly or in visions and we may not. But we cannot determine that any particular "feeling" is hearing from God. Perhaps the better question is "how do I know God is relating tome and I to him, and for that we have faith with good reasons!
That is a great response. I'm glad you accept the possiblity of an audible voice or a vision. I think there are those who feel those possibilities were for another specific time period. But I also appreciate your "relational" explanation as it seems most logical. I can see that this site is going to be good for my brain and my soul!
